It is interesting how much math comes into even the most basic of like. Making things. Making almost anything. And often not numbers necessarily but proportions and geometry. I think all the time about how castles were built with geometry at the heart of it. And I use the same kind of proportional math to make socks fit. And none of my pieces are ever knit with a prime number of stitches--because you use factors to make neat colorwork and ribbing and different stitches. Idk ! I remember constantly thinking 'how the hell is THIS gonna come in useful ?' But it always does. Math is at the heart of everything, and knowing how to apply it is a tool of critical importance to Thinking Up A Shape And Making It.

I wonder if I'm having my midlife crisis now. Maybe if you don't marry or have children, you just....jump ahead. Start worrying at 32 about the shape you'll leave behind, if any at all, and how that makes you feel about the cold and windless maw of eternity.

Did they fucking age Asajj up from Legends to Canon/TCW for her to flirt with Obi-Wan and date Quinlan because I'm losing it over this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For further context some other Star Wars characters' ages (canon for most, Legends for Aayla and Quinlan because they don't have a canon birth year)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok, so get this: she was younger than Padmé, Aayla and maybe even Anakin originally, but they aged her up 7-11 years to get her with Quinlan and Obi-Wan. Oh. While this was most likely not an intentional decision it still really disappoints me because imo she works so much better in the younger age group
Btw, this means that in Legends by the start of the Clone Wars she was 17-21, what the fuck. And by the end of it she would be 20-24. Incredibly fucked up I think
For even further context, the ages at the beginning and the end of the clone wars: Obi-Wan & Quin - 35, 38 Aayla - 26, 29 Padmé - 24, 27 Anakin - 19, 21 *Ahsoka - 14, 17 **Asajj - 17/18/19/21, 20/21/22/23/24

Six(ish) Sentence Sunday
Tumblr media
Thanks @blairwaldcrf and @ssmtskw for the tags! This is technically only five sentences, but there is also some wanton semicolon abuse, so I think it counts.
The thing about Alex is, he’s always ten steps ahead of himself. When faced with a problem, more often than not the solution will come to him fully formed and he has to pick up the thread and walk it backwards through the labyrinthine pathways of his brain’s logic until all the twists and turns fit together; until he understands the steps to take to get himself from point A to point B. He’s always been this way, to the confusion of most people around him and the dismay of more than one high school math teacher begging him to show his working. The point is, he knows that what he’s looking at is how they get June home safely. He just needs to fit all the puzzle pieces together so he understands how.
Forever feeling feral for whatever y'all are up to, so tags below the cut and, as always, anyone who wants to play! (If you take the open tag please tag me so I can see!!)

Unnonexistence's Notecard Method for Learning Mathematics
Hello! This is the study method I developed after flunking out of first-year university algebra and having to retake it! It may or may not be particularly innovative and it may or may not help you, but I did (eventually) graduate with a Bachelor's degree in math despite having unmedicated ADHD, so, y'know, there's that. I owe it mostly to the notecards.
DISCLAIMER that any example cards are my actual real notes & I am not fact-checking them. They lean towards intuitive rather than strictly correct & were only ever intended to be for personal reference. I did pass these courses, and I think most of the cards are pretty good, but like... use at your own risk.
Tumblr media
You Will Need:
A pack of index cards. I like the 3" x 5" ones that are lined on the front and blank on the back.
Some pens you like. I use fine-tip markers in about 4 colours, plus a white gel pen for fixing mistakes. Pencil can get smudgy over time, so it's not ideal.
Any course materials you have (notes, textbook, etc.)
Optionally, a nice box for your index cards. (You can also just use a rubber band or something. Whatever).
General Approach
We're making reference cards. One concept per card. You probably have an intuitive sense of how big A Concept is for you - it should be an amount of information that can comfortably fit in your brain at one time. If it doesn't fit on one or maaaybe two cards, it's probably too big.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a topic I broke up into two cards - Chain Rule and Extension of Chain Rule. One IS an extension of the other, but the information is a lot easier to remember in two chunks. (3 pictures, here, because the first card is double-sided).
You are NOT trying to cram as much information as you can onto each card. You are trying to create an easy reference for yourself, which means making the cards as clear and legible as you can. When it's 5 minutes before your calculus exam and you're having a panic attack because you forgot how the chain rule works, you want to be able to flip through, find that Chain Rule card, and be able to absorb the information on there.
For math courses, A Concept is often a definition, a theorem, a formula, or a problem-solving approach. As much as possible, you want to write it down in a way that makes sense to you. Add any helpful tips or intuitive explanations or things you keep forgetting. If your cards are blank on the back, that's a great place to draw diagrams.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(On the back of this card you can see where I wrote "Rho" in pencil and never bothered to replace it with the symbol, lol. My prof had bad handwriting & I wasn't sure how it was supposed to look.)
Proofs are often too long to fit on a card, but if you have a theorem where the proof is important, it's a good idea to write out a little summary of how the proof works/how to do it.
Tumblr media
Ideally, you do the work of Understanding The Concept when you're making the card, and then you can just refer back to it in future. I forget definitions a lot, and this saved me so much time that I would have spent reading one confusing page of the textbook over and over or trying to find stuff in my notes.
I try to keep my formatting mostly consistent. Clear title. Card numbers in the top right corner so I know if anything's missing. Definitions in black ink with important words underlined in colour. I tend to use coloured ink for things like examples and personal commentary. I also use it to create a visual distinction when I do need to cram something on there (not ideal, but sometimes necessary).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Method
Sit down with your class notes or your textbook. Your goal is to get all the important concepts you're supposed to have learned in this course so far onto notecards. (Probably not all in one go.)
The ideal time to do this is right after each lecture (most math lectures are around 2-5 cards worth of material), but that's easier said than done. I always had a hard time keeping up & all my card decks, as a result, get spottier towards the end of the term. It's fine. Do your best.
I mostly went through the course material in order. I kept checklists of which lectures I had already made cards for, and which ones still needed doing.
If you don't really get something, but you know you need a card for it, at least put the definition down. You can make a better version or add more notes later. I sometimes make placeholder cards with just a title so I'll remember to come back to something.
If you write down a definition, and you're like "this refers to another thing, and idk what it is but it's come up a few times now," you probably need to make a notecard for that other thing.
How I Use The Cards
When you're doing assignments, it's really useful to have your stack of cards there to refer to. If something comes up that you don't remember the definition for, you can look it up. If you're doing proofs, having all the theorems from the course handy is a great way of getting ideas for where to start. If you're doing calculations, it's helpful to have the techniques you need written out step by step.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spent a lot of my exam prep time making cards and going through the ones I'd made. It gave me a sense of what I already knew and what I needed to spend more time on. Having things broken up into small chunks also made it a lot easier for my brain to hang onto them.
After making cards like this for a few terms, I also found them really helpful for reviewing concepts from previous courses. Sometimes you just need to refresh your memory on something from the prereq so you're not totally lost. I've graduated now & I still refer back to my cards sometimes.
Conclusion
Well, that's my (somewhat rambly) explanation of my main study method! I hope it's helpful for at least a few people out there. I wish you the best of luck learning math & whatever else you might be studying. You've got this!!

oh baby, it’s cold outside
hi, i’m andi, i live in the midwest, and i am freezing.
so, instead of getting up and leaving my comfy comfy bed, i wrote this fluffy, little byler ficlet for all of you. set during the 1994 north american cold wave so will and mike are almost 23! enjoy your domestic, established relationship byler. <3
It’s freezing in the apartment.
Okay, so maybe Will isn’t the best person to gauge just how cold it is in the crummy little apartment he and Mike have lived in for almost a year now. Will feels like he’s always cold, which really isn’t great for a person who lives in Chicago and also who lives in an apartment where the heat only works half the time.
But today, Will knows it’s not just him. No, it’s literally freezing cold today.
Basically all of the Midwest has turned into the equivalent of a freezer. It’s about -20 degrees today, but the last Will saw on the news before he and Mike went to bed last night, the weatherman was predicting wind chills of close to -70 degrees.
(You know it’s going to be a miserable day when somehow, even the Upside Down and the weird blend of Hawkins and the Upside Down had higher temperatures than Chicago, Illinois currently does.)
With a soft sigh, Will burrows closer to his boyfriend, pulling the comforter as close to them as he possibly can. Mike is still asleep—with a thin little line of drool trickling out of his mouth—but when Will moves close to him and makes himself comfortable in Mike’s arms, a sleepy little smile forms on Mike’s face.
He pulls Will even closer, and with his eyes still closed, he presses a soft kiss to Will’s cheek. “Please tell me it’s not time to get up,” Mike mumbles, his voice groggy.
Will laughs quietly. “Nope,” he answers, shifting to wrap his arms around Mike too. “They canceled school today, remember? So kids don’t have to stand outside and wait for the bus.”
Mike merely hums in response. He still hasn’t opened his eyes yet, and he looks rather adorable like this—with his hair all ruffled and with a sleepy smile on his face and yes, even with the drool in the corner of his mouth. Will just smiles, and as Mike shifts towards him, Will holds him closer, resting his hands gently on Mike’s back.
A beat passes.
Then:
“Shit!” Mike gasps, suddenly recoiling and giving Will an offended look. “Will!”
“What?” Will demands—partially confused but also partially annoyed at the sudden loss of his personal space warmer. “What’s wrong?”
“Your hands,” Mike whines. “Your hands are freezing, Will.”
There’s a very adorable and also very sleepy pout on Mike’s face, and honestly, Will can’t help it. He bursts into laughter—like full on, belly laughter that lasts probably longer than it should for barely 8 in the morning.
Luckily though, Mike doesn’t think he’s crazy—or maybe he does, and he’s just making good on his promise that they’d go crazy together. He joins Will’s laughter with silly, quiet laughs of his own, and he scoots back closer to Will, reaching for Will’s hands.
“How are you always so cold?” Mike asks with an incredulous laugh, holding Will’s hands between this in an obvious attempt to warm them up.
“It’s not my fault today,” Will reminds. “Subzero temperatures outside, remember? -70 degree with the wind chill?”
Mike groans, and he closes his eyes, pressing both their hands against his forehead. “Let’s move to California,” he suggests. “Lucas, Max, and El are out there. I’m sure we could find jobs.”
“Mike, you hate it when the temperature gets above 80 degrees.”
“Well, I also hate it when it gets below -70 degrees,” Mike says stubbornly, opening his eyes and looking at Will. “And you’re always freezing, so…”
Will just smiles, and he shakes his head, leaning forward and kissing his boyfriend gently. “I’m pretty sure the deal we made when we moved to Chicago for school is that if I got cold, you would just keep me warm,” he reminds teasingly. “So, I’m doing just fine here.”
Mike narrows his eyes, a bit playfully, and he lowers their hands, still holding Will’s hands between his. “You’re not allowed to touch me until your hands are warmed up,” he decides. “And don’t even think about taking off your socks, because God knows your feet are probably freezing.”
Will rolls his eyes. “You’re crazy, you know?”
Mike merely hums in response, then he lifts their hands, placing a soft kiss against the back of Will’s hand. “Maybe a little,” he agrees, and he kisses Will’s hand again, scooting close. “Or maybe just crazy for you?”
“Now that was a bad joke,” Will teases softly, and he leans forward, kissing Mike—slow and sweet. “Could’ve at least said something about going crazy together.”
“My brain isn’t fully awake yet,” Mike huffs, but he’s smiling too. “And all my brainpower is just focused on warming you up.”
“My hero,” Will deadpans, and Mike just rolls his eyes, before placing another soft kiss against Will’s hand. Then, he lets go of both of Will’s hands and pulls Will back into his arms, hugging him close.
It’s warm in Mike’s arms—warm and safe and familiar and comforting. And though the two of them have been together for over five years now, that doesn’t stop the fluttery feeling that forms inside Will’s stomach when he’s close to Mike. It’s like the two of them are still finding new ways to fall in love with each other—more and more every single day.
“We’re staying in bed all day today, right?” Mike mumbles pressing his forehead against Will’s and smiling sleepily.
“Sounds like a plan to me,” Will whispers back, and he leans forward, kissing his boyfriend softly. Mike just smiles, leaning in closer and kissing Will back, and Will can’t help but smile.
Little moments like this… they’re what he’s always dreamed and never imagined he would get to have. But now, Will is here—safe and warm and wrapped up in the arms of the person who loves more than anything else in the world.
And he’s happy. God, Will is just so, so happy.
“I love you,” Mike murmurs, and he offers Will another sleepy smile.
Will just smiles back, hugging Mike closer, and he closes his eyes. “I love you too.”
(It’s freezing in the apartment—and in the world outside their doors.
But that’s okay. Will doesn’t have anywhere to be right now.
Everything he needs is right next to him.)

small update
ok so um I got my number theory paper today, and the TA had cut marks for me because i left the answer at 66^2 and not 4356 (fermat's little theorem) 😔 I even wrote the full proof
my friend told me I should mail the TA about this, I got 14/20 and should be getting 17or18/20 😔
scores aside, number theory is so much fun, so much fun. the only good thing here is that I know the concepts well, and I fully knew the paper (still fucked it up, because I'm so frickin slow while writing and time). and it hurts worse because there's not enough proof that validates my knowledge. which in turn makes me question if i actually do have any.
I am, in general, a person who does well in concepts but screws up the exams (70% of the time) and I'm trying, I'm trying to get myself out of this "exam paniK" that I often spiral into, just minutes before the exam. I hope I change and grow; I hope, I hope.
